2021 Season Begins Saturday At Redwood Acres Raceway
The long offseason for North Coast race fans will finally come to an end this Saturday, May 1 as Redwood Acres Raceway will host the first race of the 2021 season. This weekend’s event will be one of 11 scheduled race dates for the year and will mark the first time since September of 2019 that fans will be in attendance. Excitement is in the air with drivers in the roadrunners, mini stocks, bombers, Legends and late models eager to once again race in front of fans.
The roadrunners are Redwood Acres Raceway’s low budget, entry division. Bryan Brandt was the 2020 roadrunner division champion and the competition for this year should be greater with new cars and drivers going for this season’s championship.
Gary Klinetobe added another championship in the mini stock division last season with his third overall in the division. While he is the favorite to take a third straight title, there are many drivers who are looking forward to knocking him off his champion’s throne.
The 2020 championship in the bomber division was won by Sam Brown by a mere four points. Donnie Brown was runner up in points last year and has turned over the wheel of his car to Tyler Krupa who will be doing double duty this season between the bombers and Legends.
Competition in the Legends division should ramp up even further in 2021 as the division continues to grow. James Nichols will have his hands full trying to defend his status as champion. Dane Nissen placed second in the points to Nichols in 2020 and was a favorite to contend for the 2021 title but a vicious wreck at Shasta Speedway last weekend will prevent the veteran racer from racing this Saturday. RAR has attained INEX sanctioning for the Legends division this season which will allow all participants to compete in the national points series.
The COVID-19 pandemic hit the late model division the hardest in 2020 with teams struggling to field entries race to race. Defending champion Dustin Walters will be eager to take on any and all comers who will try to prevent him from repeating the feat.
A limited number of tickets are still available for this Saturday’s event at Redwood Acres Raceway and can only be purchased via the track’s website www.RacinTheAcres.com. Pits will open at 9:00 AM with practice beginning at 1:00 PM. Grandstands open at 4:00 PM with racing starting at 5:30 PM. Masks must be worn by fans if they are out of their seats or if they are unable to maintain a six-foot distance from non-family or group members. Vendors will be moving throughout the grandstands selling food, beer, wine, popcorn, candy and soft drinks.
The event will be streamed live on YouTube and Facebook via https://www.youtube.com/c/RedwoodAcresRaceway. You can also follow RAR on Twitter @RacinTheAcres.
